Deadlifts are by far one of my favourite lifts and when performed correctly have many benefits
In terms of which type of deadlift is best Escamilla et al. (2002), conducted an extensive study on the electromyographic activities of sumo and conventional style deadlifts. They compared the EMG activation of the glutes, hamstrings, quads, adductors, paraspinals, calves, traps and tibialis anterior in both movements. Both the sumo and conventional elicited similar activation in most muscle groups except the quads, tibialis anterior and calves.
They concluded by saying “athletes may choose to employ either the sumo or conventional deadlift style, depending on which muscles are considered most important according to their training protocols
In terms of torque development and vertical jump performance most research seems to point to benefits for the conventional dead (Thompson et al. 2015)
